Adopt A School
Four “adopted” schools in Halton Region
There are several definitions of the word “adopt”
– however they tend include a reference to “…the responsibility for care,
supervision, and financial support”.
Over the past year, The Prosperity ONE Charitable Foundation
has “adopted” four schools in the Halton region, through its partnership with
the Halton Learning Foundation. Each
school received $2,000 from the Prosperity ONE Charitable Foundation to support
a particular program for their students.
Three of the schools (Frontenac Public School in Burlington,
J.M. Denyes Public School in Milton and Centennial Public School in Georgetown)
chose to concentrate their funding on reading and literacy materials, while
McKenzie-Smith Bennett Public School in Acton focused on expanding their
breakfast program.
Paul VanderHelm,
principal at Centennial Public School remarked, “We are very fortunate and
pleased to have the Prosperity ONE Charitable Foundation work with us in
developing literacy skills within our community. Children share their
enthusiasm and knowledge not only at school but at home with their parents and
siblings. Each child benefits from having reading materials that encourage
learning and growth in self esteem.”
“Thank you to Prosperity
ONE’s Charitable Foundation for this generous donation to support our breakfast
program,” remarked Sharon French, principal of McKenzie-Smith Bennett. “We know
that research supports the importance of nutrition in development of the brain.
Our staff appreciates the positive tone that the breakfast program sets, as
approximately 200 students drop in for a healthy start to their day.”
“Our Foundation is very pleased to get involved with the
Adopt a School program through the Halton Learning Foundation,” commented Mike
Shepherd, chair of the Prosperity ONE Charitable Foundation. “The main focus is
to help to eliminate barriers to learning for Halton student and through the
Adopt a School program, we can be there to help them out a little bit along the
way” said Shepherd. Members of the team at Prosperity ONE also volunteer their
time at the schools.
“We’d like to thank Prosperity ONE’s Foundation for
partnering with us to ensure that these students have the appropriate resources
they need to excel,” said Susan Busby, chair,
Halton Learning Foundation.
Our Schools
The Prosperity ONE Charitable Foundation was pleased to partner with the
Halton
Learning Foundation as part of their Adopt a School Program by “adopting”
Frontenac Public School in Burlington and Centennial Public School in Georgetown
in January 2009. Frontenac was selected by the
Halton Learning Foundation as one
of the schools to receive $2,000 to acquire reading materials for the school’s
home reading program (kindergarten through grade 3) in order to provide remedial
assistance with literacy. The credit union’s charitable foundation is already a
partner with three other public schools in Halton Region through the Halton
Learning Foundation, including J.M. Denyes in Milton, McKenzie-Smith Bennett in
Acton and Centennial in Georgetown.
