Milton CEO in top 10 fundraisers across Canada for 2008 MS Super Cities WALK

Milton, ON – Michael Shepherd, CEO of Prosperity ONE Credit Union, secured a spot in the top 10 individual fundraisers in Canada for the second year in a row during the recent Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada’s Super Cities WALK for MS.

Shepherd raised a personal record of $21,500 during the recent Milton-Halton Hills Super Cities WALK, surpassing his 2007 total of $18,500.

In 1983 at the age of 18, Mike’s wife Linda was first diagnosed with MS.  Most of their 28 years together has been framed by the limitations that come with living with MS.  Linda’s courage in fighting the debilitating effects of MS inspired Mike to join the fight against MS and to get involved in the MS Super Cities WALK when it came to Milton.  Not only has Mike been the top fundraiser for the Milton-Halton Hills walk for the past ten years, he also acted this year as its honourary co-chair.  Funds raised by the Super Cities WALK support research and support services.

“It is difficult to articulate how I feel about what we were able to accomplish.  It is humbling to think that Linda and I can go hat in hand and have businesses and individuals respond the way they do”, said Shepherd.  “We live in such a giving community and our ability to raise this kind of money is a tribute to the true generosity of Milton and Halton Hills”.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15-40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives.

The Super Cities WALK is the MS Society’s largest pledge-based fundraiser involving over 70,000 participants and volunteers in more than 160 communities across Canada in the spring and early fall. Each event location has routes of varying lengths and at least one that is wheelchair accessible.

The WALK began in 1991 and is now one of the Society’s most important events.  In 2007, the WALK raised $13 million in support of multiple sclerosis.
